Staff Procedures

In our information-rich times,
you can't live without the media center

Your Partner in the Instructional Process

Story Programs: Grades K-1 have a weekly 40 minute book exchange visit and a story program or technology instructional lesson. Grade 2 has a 50 minute book browse/story and technology lessons.

Book Browse/Exchange Visits: Grade 3-5 have a 50 minute, biweekly technology lesson. They also can use some of their time in the media center to check out books.Teachers can also send students to the media center during the day when staff can assist them with book needs and technology questions.

Instructional Activities: Information skills and technology skills instruction are integrated into the curriculum. When planning a research unit or technology project, please meet with the library media specialist to determine skills to include in the unit.

Examples of what the library media specialist does: Recommends and provides resources, prepares reading lists and bibliographies, teaches information/technology skills, gives booktalks, creates web pages with quality links, provides technology training.

Using the Media Center

Students may use the media center on an independent basis as individuals, and on a scheduled basis as an entire class. The media center is open throughout the school day to provide students, teachers, and staff with the opportunity to research and utilize all multimedia tools and resources needed to complete individual/class assignments and projects.

Teachers are encouraged to send students (calling to check to be sure there is staff in the library) to the media center any time that they have an information problem to solve! Students should be allowed to borrow and return items as needed. Sometimes this may be on a daily basis.

Student Passes: Students do not need passes to come to the media center during the instructional day.

Computer Lab: Teachers schedule the computer lab by emailing the library media specialist or assistant. Please plan classroom projects with the LMS. The library media specialist can help you with technology integration.

Library: Classroom library times are part of the specialist rotation schedule. Extra classes can be scheduled by teachers after conferring with the LMS.

Equipment: AV equipment and technology equipment must be signed out of the media center. An equipment release form must be completed when equipment is taken out of the school building.

The media center is responsible for ordering supplies to meet the staff’s needs. In the media center work room you will find the following supplies: DVD-R and CD-R discs, batteries, photo quality paper and photo printer supplies. This helps us determine what and when to reorder supplies. Laminating film is located in the basement near the machines.
