Caffeine and Children

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that teenagers should consume 100 milligrams or less daily of caffeine.  One 24 ounce can of Monster Energy drink containes about 240 milligrams of caffeine.  This is seven times the caffeine levels in one 12 ounce can of soda!

Caffeine is noted for its stimulant effects and it acts as a mild diuretic.  However, in children and teens this is too much for the body to handle.

Plain water works well to hydrate the body and it helps to  decrease fatigue and increase energy.  Adequate sleep and exercise also help to keep energy levels elevated the "natural" way.  Encouraging these healthy habits, rather than relying on caffeine stimulants, will contribute to health and safety in our children.
